— odin still banished geiravor to niflheim in the aftermath of asgard's invasion and she became hel. but instead of blinding hodr, odin bound his soul, so when hodr is killed by vali after the failed coup, he simply reincarnated like a pseudo einherjar. the soulbinding ensured he would never make it to niflheim.
— it takes several cycles before hel and her family figure out that's what's happened to hodr, and when she finally finds him, his current incarnation is bucky barnes whateveritcosts, though already captured by hydra and turned into the winter soldier. she frequently walks into his dreams and appears to him when he's awake and on missions, trying to break whatever hold hydra has on him while also hoping to trigger his memories of his past life.
— when odin is finally defeated, hel walks out of niflheim and heads to wakanda, where bucky has been recovering; as a deity of death and the afterlife, she has a following among the wakandans, and is welcome among them. bucky still doesn't remember her as geiravor but recognizes her as the "angel" in his dreams, and they spend time together in wakanda before he's recruited by steve for the fight against thanos. she joins them.
— in the course of fighting together, sparks of memory return, but thanos gets all the stones and triggers the snap. bucky is disintegrated, but hel survives, however that sends her into a downward spiral, consumed by her grief.
